Theatre & Dance

From theatre history and acting techniques to stage lighting and costuming, the study of theatre and dance covers every aspect of this age-old art form.

At IU South Bend, you can earn a Bachelor of Arts in theatre or a Bachelor of Fine Arts in theatre. The academic and production aspects of the program are integrated to provide students every opportunity to learn the art of theatre.

Each year theatre and dance students perform, design, or work on several major productions in the IU South Bend Campus Auditorium and the Upstage Theatre, our black box theatre.  Entrance auditions for the theatre and dance program are held throughout the year and at thespian festivals in Indiana and neighboring states. We also accept digital submissions using the common prescreen requirements spearheaded by Paper Mill Playhouse.

Entrance Auditions

Entrance Auditions allow students to be directly admitted into the major based on recommendations of the faculty committee and confer eligibility for the first-year scholarships.

Perform on a regular basis

As a theatre and dance major, you’ll take part in the Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts Performance Season, including three theatrical productions performed on stage in the IU South Bend Campus Auditorium or in our black box venue, the Upstage Theatre. But that’s just the beginning of the opportunities available to you.

Each year, there are a number of collaborative productions within the Raclin School that can provide you with additional chances to perform. You could be a part of an opera, help bring a fellow student’s artistic vision to life, or be a part of the annual Fill the Cupboard Cabaret.

You can also participate in one of our wide variety of dance ensembles and perform on campus and around the Michiana community. From tap to ballet to middle eastern dance, there are plenty of chances to explore new ways to express yourself.
