IU South Bend fine arts and integrated new media students are gearing up for the annual Student Exhibition, set to run from Monday, February 17 through Saturday, March 14, 2020 in the campus Art Gallery. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, February 20 at 5 p.m. in the gallery.
The exhibition is an annual event that allows IU South Bend students taking fine arts classes in photography, drawing and painting, printmaking, sculpture, and graphic design to share their art with the public, as well as fellow students, faculty, and staff.
Making art work is an ongoing process in which all artists engage, so students at every level working in any media are encouraged to participate, Susan Moore, Department Chair of Fine Arts, says.
Students choose the best of the art they have been working on throughout the current school year to submit for the exhibition, in consultation with the faculty. Each piece selected reveals the student’s skills, experiences, and feelings behind the creation of the piece.
When I am looking through my artwork to pick things out for a show, I look for pieces that I feel are going to best represent my body of work on both an aesthetic level as well as a quality level. I like to exhibit a level of professionalism that will show how much effort I put into my art, while also still being able to convey my own message,” Charlie Meyers, BFA Painting and Drawing, says.
Students should consult their teachers in selecting art. They should select work that best communicates an idea or vision that helped motivate the artist. For me, art that evokes an emotional response or provokes thought in the audience is most interesting, Moore explains.
Students can drop off their work and completed forms from Feb. 5 to Feb. 7 from 12-5 pm at the art gallery located in the Education and Arts building.
Many students use this time to express their artistic interests and views. Please join us in celebrating all of them, and stop by the art gallery and take a look at some of the outstanding creative accomplishments.
